Education

If you want to learn more about God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit of God and the Bible, Utica United Methodist Church is a terrific place to attend.

Caring, knowledgeable volunteer teachers minister to everyone from newborns (in our Arky Ark Nursery) to full-grown adults (in our Adult Sunday School Classes and Bible studies) and all ages in between.

Since Christian Education doesn't always take place in a classroom, members of Utica United Methodist Church learn about the Lord in a variety of settings-from a puppet show about peer pressure to building projects for the underprivileged (a Youth service project). You'll find many educational opportunities here at UUMC. One of them is bound to be right for you and your family.

  • Children's & Youth Sunday School (Crib - 12th Grade)
Age specific Sunday School is offered throughout the year for all children in crib – 12th grade.  The upper grades, 6th, 7th and 8th are placed together in the Junior High class and the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are together in the Senior High class.

3 year olds – 5th grade learn weekly lessons by the Methodist publisher, Cokesbury.

The Junior High class focuses their weekly lessons around two main publications The 13 Most important Lessons for Teens and Core Belief Bible Study Series.

The Senior High class centers their lessons around Life Application studies and Spiritual Discipline studies.

  • Third Grade Bible Presentation and Orientation
Every year students in the third grade are presented with a study Bible.  This presentation is open to all 3rd graders.
  • Vacation Bible School (4 yrs. - Jr. High)
VBS is held during the summer.
  • K.I.D.S. Club (Kdg. - 12th Grade)
K.I.D.S. stands for Kids In Dedicated Service.  This program runs October – April.  In each session (approximately 6 weeks) the children work on a project directed toward a different group in our community.  For instance: coat and sweater donations for the homeless, birdhouses for the senior center, cheer bags for diabetes patients.  The focus changes each session but each week includes the opportunity to join us for dinner ($2.00 ea) at 5:30 p.m., craft or center time 6:00, sanctuary time 6:30, Musical Disciples (the children’s choir group) 7:00.  This group takes occasional trips to Soup kitchens, senior citizen’s facilities, and other locations.
  • Confirmation Class (8th Grade & Higher)
This class is held weekly on Wednesdays from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. and is open to all 8th graders.  It is facilitated by our Associate Pastor, David Goudie.  The curriculum used is Claiming the Name.  It includes lessons on basic beliefs and information on the United Methodist Church.  At the end of this year-long class the students will have the option of joining the United Methodist Church by Confession of Faith.
  • United Methodist Youth Fellowship - UMYF (Jr. - Sr. High)
United Methodist Youth Fellowship is a time for youth to learn along side other youth.  This program runs September thru May, is facilitated by an adult youth leader and is open to all youth in 6th – 12th grades.

  • Youth Service Project
Solutions Ministry is a group established at Utica UMC to give assistance where needed to it’s members and friends.  The youth service project is one way assistance is given.  Youth are encouraged to participate with various service projects.  The hours they work are logged and converted to an hourly monetary rate.  The youth may then use their accumulated hours to buy down the cost of youth trips and activities.  Available service projects are listed on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall.

John 7:14-36

But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? Jesus therefore answered them and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or [whether] I speak from myself. He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

Colossians 3:15-17

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to the which also ye were called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms [and] hymns [and] spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God. And whatsoever ye do, in word or in deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

1 Timothy 4:16

Take heed to thyself, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee.
